The Light of the World

This is the greatest story ever told. Jesus Christ is the light of the world. He has enlightened everyone who ever lived. He is enlightening everyone on the Earth. He will enlighten everyone who ever lives.

In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
     and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him,
     and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
     and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
     and the darkness can never extinguish it.

God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. (John 1:1-13)

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
     The skies display his craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
     night after night they make him known.
They speak without a sound or word;
     their voice is never heard.
Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
     and their words to all the world. (Psalm 19:1-4)

In fact, it says,
     “The message is very close at hand;
          it is on your lips and in your heart.”

And that message is the very message about faith that we preach: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. For “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”

But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

But not everyone welcomes the Good News, for Isaiah the prophet said, “LORD, who has believed our message?” So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. But I ask, have the people of Israel actually heard the message? Yes, they have:

The message has gone throughout the earth,
and the words to all the world.

But I ask, did the people of Israel really understand? Yes, they did, for even in the time of Moses, God said,
“I will rouse your jealousy through people who are not even a nation.
I will provoke your anger through the foolish Gentiles.”
And later Isaiah spoke boldly for God, saying,
I was found by people who were not looking for me.
I showed myself to those who were not asking for me.

But regarding Israel, God said,
All day long I opened my arms to them,
but they were disobedient and rebellious.
” (Romans 10:8-21)

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. (Romans 1:20)

Won’t you take a moment to acknowledge God who has enlightened you to accept his wonderful salvation?
