As believers, we are called to live with a sense of urgency, recognizing that our salvation is nearer each day. The Bible urges us to awaken from spiritual slumber, cast off the deeds of darkness, and walk in the light of Christ. Romans 13 and Ephesians 2 remind us that we were once dead in our sins, but God, rich in mercy, made us alive through His grace. We are now called to walk in His ways, putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, and living out the good works He has prepared for us.
Do this, knowing the time, that it is already time for you to awaken out of sleep, for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first believed. The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let’s therefore throw off the works of darkness, and let’s put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts. (Romans 13:11-14 WEB)
You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience; among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus; for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them. (Ephesians 2:1-10 WEB)
It is popular to be woke but it is not popular to awaken and grow up
As followers of Christ, we are called to live differently from the world around us. The Bible teaches us to leave behind our old sinful ways and to walk in the light of God’s truth, being renewed in our minds and hearts. Ephesians 4, 1 Thessalonians 5, and Hebrews 6 remind us to be watchful, sober, and growing in faith, always pressing forward in our relationship with Christ. These passages challenge us to live in righteousness, to encourage one another, and to continue moving toward maturity in our faith.
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts; who having become callous gave themselves up to lust, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But you did not learn Christ that way; if indeed you heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus: that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit; and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth. (Ephesians 4:17-24 WEB)
But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you. For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape. But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief. You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness, so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep in the night, and those who are drunk are drunk in the night. But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God didn’t appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do. (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 WEB)
Therefore leaving the teaching of the first principles of Christ, let us press on to perfection—not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith toward God, of the teaching of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3his will we do, if God permits. For concerning those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify the Son of God for themselves again, and put him to open shame. For the land which has drunk the rain that comes often on it, and brings forth a crop suitable for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receives blessing from God; but if it bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected and near being cursed, whose end is to be burned. (Hebrews 6:1-8 WEB)
- Knit together in love – A grove of Live Oaks is stronger than a single tree because deep roots are intertwined with neighboring trees. Christians are stronger when they are knit together in love.
- Stop doing these things (they will destroy the joy of your salvation) – Stop doing these things. They will not help you grow in grace and knowledge. They will destroy the joy of your salvation.
- 20 Things Godly Christians Do Every Day – Christians need to do these 20 things every day to get right with God and be godly with each other which fulfills the law and the prophets
Have you been lulled to sleep by rudiments of the Christian faith?
It’s time for believers to wake up from focusing on minor doctrinal debates and remember the true mission of Christ: to seek and save the lost, for the sick need a healer. We are called to prepare our minds for action, live in holiness, and reject worldly philosophies that distract us from Christ. In Jesus, we find fullness and forgiveness, as He triumphed over sin and death. Let us live in obedience, holiness, and faith, trusting fully in the grace that will be revealed at His coming.
Therefore, prepare your minds for action, be sober and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ—as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance, but just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy; for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:13-16 WEB)
Be careful that you don’t let anyone rob you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the elements of the world, and not after Christ. For in him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily, and in him you are made full, who is the head of all principality and power; in whom you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the sins of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us; and he has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross; having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. (Colossians 2:8-15 WEB)
The phrase “precept upon precept, line upon line” from Isaiah 28:10 was originally a mockery of the drunken prophets and priests who refused to listen to God’s repeated teachings. It shows how they ignored God’s truth, not an example of ideal Christian teaching.
Sadly, many Christians today fall into a similar trap, isolating themselves, focusing on minor doctrines, and missing the most important things—love, mercy, and sharing the gospel. This isn’t the way God calls us to live. We must wake up from spiritual slumber, step out of our comfort zones, and engage the world with the message of Christ. Don’t get caught up in debates over small differences, but focus on living out the love and truth of Jesus, as He commands.
- I fear that you will be corrupted by religion – But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent.
- Learning from the parable of the sower and the seed – The mirror of the parable of the sower and the seed shows we all have these kinds of soil in ourselves. What can we do about it?
- The only real enemy of every Christian – The real enemy of every Christian is the devil, the father of lies, the great deceiver, the accuser. Don’t let him kill and destroy.
- Gnosticism and the worship of special knowledge in the church today – Gnosticism is literally “the cult based on special, personal knowledge.” Gnosticism worships special personal knowledge thus causes division.
