Matthew 24 is the second coming (not the rapture)

I have heard and read lots of confusing messages on Matthew 24 so I wanted to take the time to look at this subject carefully. In Matthew 24 and 25 Jesus is answering very specific questions regarding a statement he made. It is important to understand whether this is the rapture of the church to meet the Lord in the air or the second coming of Jesus Christ to the earth.

And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. (Matthew 24:1-2)

There has been a lot of study, discussion, and argument on whether this was prophesying the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem in AD 70 or the future second coming of Jesus Christ after the Great Tribulation. In my opinion, The Moody Bible Commentary and the BE Series Commentary get it right. Jesus was prophesying both events, but the disciples asked about the Great Tribulation and Jesus answered their question…

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and  what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

The disciples were well aware of Old Testament prophecies about the judgement of the second coming.

Jeremiah prophesied the judgment of the second coming

This is the message the LORD gave concerning Israel and Judah. This is what the LORD says:
“I hear cries of fear;
there is terror and no peace.
Now let me ask you a question:
Do men give birth to babies?
Then why do they stand there, ashen-faced,
hands pressed against their sides
like a woman in labor?
In all history there has never been such a time of terror.
It will be a time of trouble for my people Israel.
Yet in the end they will be saved!

For in that day,”
says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies,
“I will break the yoke from their necks
and snap their chains.
Foreigners will no longer be their masters.
For my people will serve the LORD their God
and their king descended from David—
the king I will raise up for them.

Look! The LORD’s anger bursts out like a storm,
a driving wind that swirls down on the heads of the wicked.
The fierce anger of the LORD will not diminish
until it has finished all he has planned.
In the days to come
you will understand all this.
(Jeremiah 30)

Daniel prophesied the judgment of the second coming

I went on praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the LORD my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain. As I was praying, Gabriel, whom I had seen in the earlier vision, came swiftly to me at the time of the evening sacrifice. He explained to me, “Daniel, I have come here to give you insight and understanding. The moment you began praying, a command was given. And now I am here to tell you what it was, for you are very precious to God. Listen carefully so that you can understand the meaning of your vision.
“A period of seventy sets of seven has been decreed for your people and your holy city to finish their rebellion, to put an end to their sin, to atone for their guilt,  to bring in everlasting righteousness, to confirm the prophetic vision, and to anoint the Most Holy Place. Now listen and understand! Seven sets of seven plus sixty-two sets of seven will pass from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until a ruler—the Anointed One—comes. Jerusalem will be rebuilt with streets and strong defenses, despite the perilous times.
“After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple.  The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.  The ruler will make a treaty with the people for a period of one set of seven, but after half this time, he will put an end to the sacrifices and offerings. And as a climax to all his terrible deeds, he will set up a sacrilegious object that causes desecration, until the fate decreed for this defiler is finally poured out on him.” (Daniel 9:20-27)

“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise.  There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then.  But at that time your people–everyone whose name is found written in the book–will be delivered. (Daniel 12:1)

Jesus quoted Daniel’s prophecies of judgment at the second coming

Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? (Mark 9:12)

Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” (Luke 24:26)

“The day is coming when you will see what Daniel the prophet spoke about—the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing in the Holy Place.” (Reader, pay attention!) “Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. A person out in the field must not return even to get a coat. How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. And pray that your flight will not be in winter or on the Sabbath. For there will be greater anguish than at any time since the world began. And it will never be so great again. In fact, unless that time of calamity is shortened, not a single person will survive. But it will be shortened for the sake of God’s chosen ones. (Matthew 24:15-22)

Other prophecies of the judgment of the second coming

You will flee through this valley, for it will reach across to Azal. Yes, you will flee as you did from the earthquake in the days of King Uzziah of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all his holy ones with him. (Zechariah 14:5)

Enoch, who lived in the seventh generation after Adam, prophesied about these people. He said, “Listen! The Lord is coming with countless thousands of his holy ones to execute judgment on the people of the world. He will convict every person of all the ungodly things they have done and for all the insults that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” (Jude 1:14-15)

Let all creation rejoice before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness. (Psalm 96:13)

Sound the alarm in Jerusalem!
Raise the battle cry on my holy mountain!
Let everyone tremble in fear
because the day of the LORD is upon us. It is a day of darkness and gloom,
a day of thick clouds and deep blackness.
Suddenly, like dawn spreading across the mountains,
a great and mighty army appears.
Nothing like it has been seen before
or will ever be seen again. (Joel 2:1-2)

And  Jesus answered and said unto them,  Take heed that no man deceive you. (Matthew 24:4)

Prophecy of religious deception

There have been a few men throughout history who have claimed to be Jesus Christ, but most of them were insane mental cases. Apparently, this is going to become more and more common to the point it will deceive many. The only protection from this kind of deception is to rely on the unchanging divinely-inspired word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. (Matthew 24:5)

Prophecy of the beginning of sorrows

All of these terrible things are called just the beginning of sorrows…

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:6-8)

Prophecy of religious persecution

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. (Matthew 24:9-14; Mark 13:10-13; Luke 21:10-19)

Prophecy of abomination of desolation

This is a very specific prophecy of the “abomination of desolation” in the middle of the 70th week of Daniel’s prophecy (please read Daniel 9:24-27; 11:31; 12:11). This does not apply to anyone until that time.

When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. (Matthew 24:15-25; Mark 13:14-23; Luke 21:20-24)

Prophecy of the Son of Man returning

This returning is dramatically different from the prophecies of the Apostle Paul about the rapture of the church (1 Corinthians 15:51-58; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).. Either Jesus and Paul are in violent disagreement or these are 2 completely separate events.

Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Matthew 24:26-31; Mark 13:24-27; Luke 21:25-28)

Parable of the fig tree

I didn’t understand this verse very well until we got a fig tree in our backyard. It loses all of its leaves every winter and looks like a dead stick in the ground. Then just before summer, it grows the biggest greenest leaves you ever saw to hide the delicate figs. Now, whenever I see that fig tree leaf out, I know that summer is nigh. It will be the same for all of these sings. We will see one or two of them throughout history: some religious deception, some wars, some pestilence, some famine, some earthquakes, and some religious persecution. But, when all of these things come to pass, then watch out.

Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. (Matthew 24:32-35; Mark 13:28-31; Luke 21:29-33)

Many Christians confuse the “taken” in the following passage with the rapture of the church. This is wrong. It occurs in the context of the judgments at the second coming not the rapture of the church. It refers to the judgment of the Noahic flood where the unbelievers were taken in judgment and the 8 souls were kept safe and dry in the ark (1 Peter 3:20). It reflects back on the carrion birds eating the dead bodies of those who were judged (Matthew 24:28).

But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 24:36-51; Genesis 6:1-7; Mark 13:32-37; Luke 12:35-48)

There is a generation coming who will see these signs and must heed these warnings. If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your personal savior, please take a moment to get right with God by being engrafted into his love.

One Reply to “Matthew 24 is the second coming (not the rapture)”

  1. It refers to the judgment of the Noahic flood where the unbelievers were taken in judgment and the 8 souls were kept safe and dry in the ark (1 Peter 3:20). It reflects back on the carrion birds eating the dead bodies of those who were judged (Matthew 24:28).

This is not well written and confusing. I read beginning and end paragraphs and could not discern what or why things were incorrect.
