Grace and mercy rejoice and triumph over judgment

Mercy
Prophesied in the Old Testament.
Delivered by Jesus Christ.
Preached by the Apostles.
Brought Jesus Christ down to mankind.
Caused Jesus Christ to die on the cross.
Allowed Jesus Christ to rise from the grave.
Only found in the Bible.
Only commanded by God.
The only hope of the world.

For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17 )

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. (Matthew 5:7)

So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you. (James 2:12-13)

Selah! Think about it! Consider the one who loved you before you loved him. Consider the one who gave his life for you when you were dead in sins and trespasses. Consider the one who blessed you with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places. Consider his love. Consider his mercy. Consider his blessing. Do likewise!

speak and act—We may serve him without slavish fear. God’s restraints are not a bondage, but our own corruptions are so. The doom passed upon impenitent sinners at last, will be judgment without mercy. But God deems it his glory and joy, to pardon and bless those who might justly be condemned at his tribunal; and his grace teaches those who partake of his mercy, to copy it in their conduct. Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

The converse of, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Translate, “The judgment (which is coming on all of us) shall be without mercy to him who hath showed no mercy.” It shall be such toward every one as every one shall have been [Bengel]. “Mercy” here corresponds to “love,” James 2:8.

mercy rejoiceth against judgment—Mercy, so far from fearing judgment in the case of its followers, actually glorifieth against it, knowing that it cannot condemn them. Not that their mercy is the ground of their acquittal, but the mercy of God in Christ towards them, producing mercy on their part towards their fellow men, makes them to triumph over judgment, which all in themselves otherwise deserve. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

Throughout history God has reserved judgment for himself and required mercy at the hands of his people. Read about the judgment against king Ahaz and the people of Judah in 2 Chronicles 28. These Israelites went beyond God’s instruction and captured 200,000 women, boys, and girls from the Judeans. God rebuked them strongly. Read about the mercy granted to them on behalf of the Lord…

Now you intend to enslave the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But aren’t you also guilty of sinning against the LORD your God? Listen to me. Return these prisoners you have captured from your relatives, because the LORD is very angry with you.” ( 2 Chronicles 28:10-11)

Then the men who were mentioned by name took charge of the prisoners and gave clothes from the loot to all the prisoners who were naked. They provided clothes for them, gave them sandals, gave them something to eat and drink, and let them bathe. They put everyone who was exhausted on donkeys and brought them to Jericho (the City of Palms) near their own people. Then they returned to Samaria.  ( 2 Chronicles 28:15)

If your religion requires you to make judgment against your brethren and enforce judgment against your brethren, you have been taken captive by the enemy of your soul (the accuser of the brethren), and you are not being guided by Jesus Christ the Messiah God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. (James 3:17-18)

[Satan:] The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.
[Jesus Christ:] My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
(John 10:10)

  1. I grew up in a church that often said, “You can only love what God loves when you hate what God hates.” I have learned that is 100% wrong. It should be, “You can only hate what God hates when you love what God loves.”
